Madison Cellars

Madison Park is known for its wealth of independently owned businesses – which makes shopping here a treat for residents and visitors alike. For decades, wine connoisseurs have sung the praises of Madison Cellars, a genuine wine cellar accessed via a narrow stairway at the very foot of Madison Street. “I’m the second-oldest owner-operated business in Madison Park,” says Fred Andrews. Fred opened his shop in August 1985 and still remembers his first patrons – the  grandparents of some of his current customers.

Aside from advising his clientele on the perfect wines to select for a particular meal, party, event, or gift, Fred is a fun conversationalist on a wide range of topics and a wealth of information about Madison Park history. (His wine store was once the basement rec room of a home.) As he notes, the shop’s below-ground location is ideal for storing wine. “My conditions are the best in the city – cold and dark.”  Some of the wines – gifts that were given to him – date back to the 1920s and 1930s.

Fred’s customers range from those looking for a “nice wine from $15 up” to those searching for a high-end ($100-$200) gift. Either way, they appreciate Fred’s approachable demeanor, vast knowledge, diverse selection, and, yes, competitive prices. That, perhaps, is the biggest surprise to those visiting the tiny shop.

And no surprise to those who know Fred: He loves what he does and has no plans to retire. “It’s a fun job.” Besides, he chuckles, “My wife doesn’t want me home.”
