Public Safety, Potential, Patience and Play Time

Public Safety

February closes with a month of upheaval in Madison Park. The audacious break-ins at Madison Park Jewelers and The Refind Closet, causing major destruction to both stores, have stunned us all.

What next? The Public Safety Committee has scheduled a meeting with our Seattle City Council member Joy Hollingsworth’s office and several of our local businesses. We know this is one small step as we strive for a plan to reduce crime to our neighborhood businesses. Attend our Neighborhood meeting on Monday, March 25th at 6:30 (Bathhouse) for updated information.

We encourage individual blocks to create Block Watches if you don’t already have one in place. Madison Park neighbors have scheduled an informational meeting for Tuesday Match 5th at 6 p.m. at the MLK FAME Community Center to learn how to create these Block Watches. If your block is interested, have 1 or 2 representatives attend to learn more. Our website has posted several documents to help understand the steps needed to create your Block Watch. Click HERE.

Potential

Feeling stuck creatively at work or in your personal life? Set aside an hour on Tuesday March 12, 7p.m. at the Bathhouse, for Kate Gavigan, Founder of The Seattle Artist's Way Center, as she explores how to unleash your creativity and step into a life filled with imagination and fulfillment. $15 online or at the door.

A reminder that 2024 Tuesday TED Talks includes 2 more speakers- Landscape designer/architect Lisa Port April 9th Speaking on Garden Design Tickets available online; and Astronomer/UW Professor Bruce Balick on May 14th speaking on the WEB telescope and the mind-boggling wonders being discovered on the frontier. Ticket available online.

Patience

Friends of Madison Park is exploring several significant improvements to bring to our neighborhood- a summer Farmer’s Market, Beautifying our neighborhood, and exploring the possibility of having a Community Center. Each of these endeavors take time and patience to be sure we do them well and with a lasting impact.

The Farmer’s Market- Our survey this past month shows a close to unanimous support to have a Farmer’s Market. After several meetings with local farmer’s market associations, we have concluded that we need to build the infrastructure for the market over the next year and cannot rush into having a market this spring/summer. We hate to wait but feel very encouraged by the existing farmer’s market associations that we will be able to bring a market to Madison Park in the spring of 2025.

Beautify Madison Park- We are actively working on a Phase 1 of Beautifying our neighborhood and focusing on our Business district. We have scheduled a Spring Clean Day April 20 from 9 to noon and need lots of help with sweeping, raking, weeding, scrubbing. Please sign up here to volunteer that morning. School groups, troops, office community service hours- all welcome.

We are also working to bring flower filled planters to decorate the business district. We will loop back shortly with a Call Out for community support to make this happen. Hopefully coming late Spring/summer 2024.

A Community Center- The online survey showed a solid interest in creating a community center and the need to explore in more depth what that means to the community. The committee is working on next steps with focus groups and sponsorships and more. Updates coming at our Neighborhood Meeting March 25 at 6:30 at the Bathhouse.
