SCOOP DU JOUR

The coolest shop in Madison Park? Every kid in the neighborhood will tell you it’s Scoop Du Jour. The old-school ice cream parlor has been the go-to place for families for over four decades. And one family has kept it going since day one. Edward (“Bumpa”) and Barbara Washington opened the shop in July 1984 with the help of their two boys, Edward (“Uncle”) and Eric. Barbara and son Edward, a 1984 graduate of The Bush School, worked the day shift. Bumpa, then a delivery driver for Wonder Bread, took on the evening shift with Eric.  Once retired from Wonder Bread in 1999, Bumpa spent his days running errands for the shop while still handling the night shift. Today, Edward (aka Uncle) runs the shop, but long-time customers are still delighted to see Bumpa behind the counter on occasion.

Scoop Du Jour offers 27 flavors of ice cream, including kid favorites: Maui Wowie, Moose Tracks, and Huckleberry. Don’t scream for ice cream? Check out their sandwiches and burgers. The towering, requires-multiple-napkins Scoop Burger has a fan club all its own; more than one customer has declared it the best burger in town. So popular are the burgers that the ice cream shop added a commercial griddle during its 2016 remodel.

Come summer, Scoop Du Jour offers soft-serve frozen yogurt, complete with toppings, in addition to ice cream. It also offers neighborhood “kids,” home from college, a chance to work in their favorite shop.
