QUIET WINTER, BUSY SPRING

Friends of Madison Park is busy with Event plans for the spring and summer of 2025. Next steps for a renovation of the Bathhouse and Beach area are underway plus updates to share on the One Seattle Plan. Here is a “catch-up” mix of what is coming your way in Madison Park.

LITTLE BEATS HAS ITS LAST CONCERT OF THE SEASON NEXT SATURDAY MARCH 1 AT 11 A.M.- DON’T MISS JOHNNY BREGAR!!!!!

One Seattle Plan

A packed neighborhood meeting on February 4th, discussed the One Seattle Plan and its impact in our neighborhood. The One Seattle Plan Committee later that week walked the neighborhood with City Council member Joy Hollingsworth- giving her a chance to see first hand the mixture of apartments, condos, single family homes within walking distance of our thriving business corridor plus see first hand the concerns about the lack of a stormwater system in Madison Park and the recurring issues of sewage overflow into the lake and impacts on the public use of the beach.

Friends of Madison Park, on February 11th, filed an Appeal to the One Seattle Plan’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) with the City of Seattle Hearing Examiner; the appeal has since been consolidated with appeals from Mt. Baker, Hawthorne Hills, Ravenna and several Madison Park neighbors. FoMP’s Appeal requests a supplemental EIS to address concerns about this lack of stormwater infrastructure and potential harm to lake, public and salmon, in addition for the need to address parking and transit specific to our location, reduction of tree canopy, historic legacy and lack of Notice regarding the FEIS- before the Council votes on the One Seattle Plan. View Appeal HERE

The outcome of that Appeal is pending with a Prehearing Conference scheduled on March 6th. Throughout the Fall, FoMP encouraged neighbors to submit comments to the Council members- pro, con and in-between, regarding the One Seattle Plan. The Council now is waiting for directions from the Mayor’s Office regarding lot coverage under HR1110 and the outcome of these Appeals. A public meeting will be scheduled by the City Council in April but that date has not been posted yet.

We will have further updates at our next Neighborhood Meeting on Tuesday March 4th at 7 p.m. at the Bathhouse.

Agenda is HERE.

Renovation of the Bathhouse and Beach Restoration

Friends of Madison Park is moving onto the next steps to explore enhancements to our neighborhood Bathhouse, Beach area and park spaces. FoMP is now partnered with the Seattle Parks Foundation, Seattle Parks Department, Anchor QEA Landscape Architects and Signal Architecture + Research to take next steps in exploring options for improvements to our neighborhood beach and Bathhouse. Look for open community meetings later in 2025 to discuss what our neighborhood would like to see done to improve both the facility, the surrounding beach, park and dock on our waterfront. We want to gather as much input as possible during these sessions. More to come soon!

DID YOU KNOW? If Seattle experiences a strong earthquake or other significant event, everyone will be on their phones. Circuits will be overloaded and cell phone towers might be damaged. Reaching loved ones could be very difficult.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY? Ask a trusted person living east of Spokane, WA to be your out of area contact. It’s sometimes easier to get a text out of the city than across the city. Write that person’s phone number down on paper (since your phone might run out of power) and keep it somewhere close, like your wallet). And tell friends and family how to reach that person and to contact them if you are in an emergency.
