SHOP LOCAL

On an overcast Thanksgiving Day, our local shops were quiet but their window displays were brimming with holiday decorations- reminding us that in the coming weeks, they are ready to welcome shoppers with gift ideas and celebration needs.

“SHOP LOCAL” is more than a slogan, it is a reminder to consciously support our neighborhood businesses- by foregoing the big chain stores for one of a kind local wares, by dining out at one of our many local restaurants and connecting with neighbors and those who greet you in our local shops..

This December, opt to pick up your wine, your groceries, your books, art or picture frames, your health and beauty products locally. Opt to foster your well-being at one of our neighborhood health businesses, nail or hair salons. Opt to buy your flowers, children’s toys and clothing, your jewelry and cooking needs all in a local city block. Let the holiday shopping begin……

And check out our monthly Business Profiles. This month’s feature is Emry Boutique.

ONE SEATTLE PLAN

The One Seattle Plan creates a number of potential impacts in Madison Park- most significantly for our business district and connecting residential areas.

The map below of proposed zoning changes for Madison Park would include the business district being rezoned as NC2-55 (M)- a zoning designation for Neighborhood Commercial 2 with a height limit of 65 feet (app. 6 stories) and a mandatory housing affordability suffix. LR3 designation allows for residential zoning up to 5 stories; LR2 allows for residential zoning up to 4 stories and LR1 for up to 3 stories.

These are not immediate changes but allow developers and owners in the future to literally raise the roofs by a number of feet. Growth will come to Madison Park- how it is managed will hopefully not sneak up on our community but proceed in tandem with our community planning.

There are upcoming Information Sessions available at Jefferson Community Center on December 5th, 5:30-7:30 and Seattle Center Exhibition Hall December 10th, 5:30-7:30. You can also view an information session or request a virtual office meeting HERE. Go to "District 3" Zoning Changes HERE to learn more.

The deadline for Comment is December 20th, which you can submit at their email link HERE. It then goes to the State Legislature for final approval in June 2025.

PARTNERING WITH OUR PARKS

Friends of Madison Park now has two new partnerships with Parks Department:

We are now officially part of the Friends of the Parks program- working with volunteers from our neighborhood to enhance our local parks with weeding, pruning, mulching, plantings- backed by the Seattle Parks Department- which will provide support and debris removal as needed. If you are interested in being part of this volunteer team, please sign up HERE.

We are also now officially partnered with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Parks Foundation in pursuing the Madison Park Bathhouse Renovation and Beach Restoration project. Together with this team, we will be able to plan and have professional guidance on the scope and implementation of needed updates to our Beach and Bathhouse. Interested in being part of this project? Please reach out HERE.

p.s.- You may have noticed that the Parks Dept. started reseeding the grass on the beach lawns. To be continued but a good start!

FARMER’S MARKET SURVEY

Friends of Madison Park continues collecting a SURVEY to determine whether our neighborhood supports, or not, trying a Saturday morning Farmer’s Market this summer- with 20-25 vendors selling organic produce, cheeses, meats and related items from June 14 to September 13. The proposed location is 42nd Ave E between E Blaine and E Madison- the block behind the tennis courts. If you haven’t already, please complete the Survey; we want to reach as many in our community as possible in the coming weeks.

The SURVEY is posted on our website’s HOME page or you can Click HERE to take it.

Please read over the FAQ’s at the bottom of the Survey to be sure you have the information to make an informed decision. Results will be posted mid-December.
